Horror genre can be identified by several different conventions including setting, costumes, props, lighting, noises, music, camera shots and angles, and characters. The setting in a horror film is usually in an isolated location or places with little connection to largely populated places, such as old empty houses or forests. Costumes may include masks or dark/old clothing usually worn by the villain. Costumes can vary in horror films as the 'monster' will normally be wearing something different to the victims of the film. The 'victims' may have several different outfits as 'victims' can change throughout different horror films, for example the 'victims' may be an ordinary family in one horror film but a group of cheerleaders in another. Props usually include weapons such as sharp objects as they are more terrifying and threatening than guns. Props may also include things associated with evil spirits or demons such as ouija boards. Lighting is usually dark and unnatural as it helps sets the scene and convey fear and the unknown which engages the audience and makes them feel scared. Noises or sound effects may include disturbing background noises such as clocks ticking or footsteps approaching to create suspense. Music is used to help build suspense and mystery to the story and can help the audience to feel emotionally engaged in the film. Some horror films may rely on music and sound effects to make them appear spooky and engaging to watch. Camera shots and angles can help convey fear and suspense such as low angle shots of the villain to make them appear powerful. Point of view shots, which usually happen at the end of horror films, can help the audience see the story from the 'monster's' eye. Characters can vary between different types of horror films. Generic horror films usually include a main villain which can be a monster or alien or 'freak' and the hero or surviving character. Many other characters could be included such as creepy children, dumb teenagers, zombies, demons, ghosts, etc. Horror films usually aim to make people feel extreme fear or disgust which is the aim of the producers or directors.

According to Literary Devices, genre means the type of art, literature, or music characterised by a specific form, content, and style. Films can be categorised into several different genres including action, sci-fi, comedy, romance, horror, thriller, musicals, and westerns. The movie 'In Time' has several conventions of different genres, however sci-fi would be the primary genre. One of the conventions of sci-fi that can be seen in the film In Time is advanced technology. The characters have time clocks on their arms which are counting down and if the clock gets to zero they will die. This is a convention of sci-fi as this is not something you would see in the 'ordinary' world. Another convention of sci-fi which can be seen in the film is that it is set in an alternative world. The world the characters live in is divided into different zones: the poor live in one zone and the rich live in another. This can also be seen in the film The Hunger Games were their world is divided into districts. However, the world still looks the same as the ordinary world, just with a different system. This can make the audience wonder about how the world could be like or what how it might be in the future. The costumes in the film worn by the time keepers, who represent the police, are another convention of sci-fi. The time keepers wear black clothing and long black coats. They also drive plain black cars. This type of costume is usually worn in sci-fi films by the bad guys. However, in the Matrix, the good guys wear plain black clothing and long black coats. Sci-fi films also make us think about the world around us, which In Time does as the poorer people are constantly searching for more time or else they will die. However, the rich feel as if they will live forever as they have so much time so they waste it. This can make the audience question whether they are making the most of their time or if they are just wasting it.
The colour palette, which helps set the mood, in the film is another convention of sci-fi. When the characters are in the poorer zone, the colour is mostly a yellow or neutral colour. This can help set the mood of the scene and suggest desperation. However, sometimes there is a blue tinge which can be seen when they are being chased or if there is a tense scene. The colour scheme can represent the mood of the scene or how the characters are feeling. In Time can also be seen to have conventions of other genres such as action. In the film, the weapons used are guns which can be seen as the weapon of choice of plenty of other action films such as Terminator, Kill Bill, Deadpool, etc. There are also car chases in which the good guys get away. This can also be seen in the Bourne Supremacy were Matt Damon's character escapes from a car chase in Moscow. http://digitalsynopsis.com/design/cinema-palettes-famous-movie-colors/ https://www.cinema5d.com/film-color-schemes-cinematic-color-design/ https://prezi.com/o-lfnomvssem/science-fiction-genre-conventions/ |
